Lesson 3: Introduction to MIDI

Objective: Students will understand the use of MIDI in music production. Materials: Computers with internet access, Soundation accounts, speakers, and MIDI controllers.

Activities:

  1. 1
    Introduction to MIDI (25 mins):
    • Explain what MIDI is and how it differs from audio.
    • Demonstrate how to create instrument channels, add instrument presets, use the piano roll, and use a MIDI controller in Soundation.
  2. 2
    Hands-on Practice (25 mins):
    • Students create a MIDI-based project through experimentation.
  3. 3
    Discussion (10 mins):
    • Share projects and discuss what it’s like to work with MIDI.

Assignment:

Develop a project that uses at least three MIDI instruments.

Tips:

  • Virtual keyboard: When there is no access to MIDI controllers, use the Virtual keyboard to turn the computer’s keyboard into a MIDI keyboard.
