Lesson 5: Introduction to mixing and effects

Objective: Students will learn the basics of mixing and applying effects to enhance their music production. Materials: Computers with internet access, Soundation accounts, speakers, and headphones.

Activities:

    Introduction to mixing (15 mins):
    • Discuss the importance of mixing in music production.
    • Explain volume, panning, and EQ (equalization).
    • Demonstrate how to balance a mix in Soundation.

    Introduction to effects (15 mins):
    • Overview of common effects: reverb, delay, compression, and EQ.
    • Demonstrate how to apply these effects in Soundation.
  3. 3
    Mixing and effects practice (25 mins):
    • Students practice mixing their projects and applying at least two effects.
  4. 4
    Discussion (5 mins):
    • Share and compare the original vs. mixed versions of student projects.

Assignment:

Refine a previous project by improving the mix and adding effects to at least three tracks.

Tips:

  • EQ: Use the Equalizer and Filter effects for simplicity and the Parametric EQ for more advanced features. Turn on the spectrum analyzer in the Parametric EQ to visualize the frequencies.
  • Compression: Use the Compressor’s built-in visualizer together with a transient-heavy sound to better explain the effect.
