Lesson 10: Creating instruments with sampling

Objective: Students will understand the basics of sampling, including how to record, import, and manipulate audio samples with samplers for music production. Materials: Computers with internet access, Soundation accounts, speakers, headphones, and optional MIDI controllers.

Activities:

  1. 1
    Introduction to sampling (25 mins):
    • Define sampling and explain its role in modern music production. Discuss what sampling is: using pre-recorded sounds or audio clips in a new context. How sampling is used creatively in different genres.
    • Show students how to use the Simple Sampler and Beatmaker to transform audio into instruments.
  2. 2
    Sampling practice (25 mins):
    • Students practice using the Simple Sampler and Beatmaker in Soundation to create their own instruments. Encourage them to experiment with different techniques and types of samples (e.g., vocals, instruments, ambient sounds).
    • Circulate to help students with technical issues and provide feedback on their sampling choices.
  3. 3
    Discussion (10 mins):
    • Students share the sampled instruments they worked on. Lead a discussion about the different ways sampling was used and how manipulation of the samples created new sounds.

Assignment:

Find an interesting sound or piece of music, import it into Soundation, and manipulate it with a sampler to create a unique instrument for use in a future composition.

Tips:

  • Sampler choice: Use the Simple Sampler for tonal instruments you want to play melodies or chords with. Use the Beatmaker for percussive sounds or to create a drum kit.
  • Sampler settings: Experiment with the pitch, loop, and envelope of the samples in the Simple Sampler and Beatmaker to create unique sounds.
