Lesson 8: Introduction to synthesis

Objective: Students will learn the basics of sound synthesis, including oscillators, filters, and envelopes, and how to create custom sounds using a synthesizer. Materials: Computers with internet access, Soundation accounts, speakers, headphones, and optional MIDI controllers.

Activities:

  1. 1
    Introduction to synthesis (25 mins):
    • Explain the basics of synthesis (oscillators, filters, envelopes).
    • Demonstrate using a synthesizer in Soundation to create a custom sound.
  2. 2
    Sound design practice (25 mins):
    • Students will experiment with the synthesizers in Soundation, creating their own synth patches by adjusting oscillators, filters, envelopes, and audio effects. Encourage creativity in designing unique sounds.
    • Walk around to assist students and provide feedback as needed.
  3. 3
    Discussion (10 mins):
    • Students share the synth patches they created. Facilitate a discussion on the different approaches taken and how synthesis influenced the sounds.

Assignment:

Create a short piece of music using at least one custom synth patch that you designed during class.

Tips:

  • Synthesizer choice: Use the Simple Synth or VA Synth for straightforward layouts and necessary features.
  • Synthesizer presets: Use synth presets found in the Instrument presets section of the sound library as a starting point or to demonstrate different kinds of sounds.
